about
Experimental mixmaster Mark Graham grew up on the backstreets of Warrington tripping to the acid jazz boom whilst spinning the vinyl of Warp and Ninja Tune. Never far from a jazz background, with Thelonious Monk and Billie Holiday firmly rooted in his subconscious, counter culture influences blended into an intoxicating soundscape that has now been fully realised on his uncompromising debut album “Catalyst Mixing Room”.

The album explores themes of love, loss, beauty, dislocation, dissatisfaction, power, pain and above all an unswerving soulful cry of hope. Featuring collaborations with the legendary Ninja Tune / Souljazz composer/saxophonist Chris Bowden along with the stunning soulful vocals of Coldcut/ Outcast/ Nightmares on Wax collaborator, Sarah Winton, this is an album that truly rewards repeated listening.

“Catalyst Mixing Room” changes landscape at every turn. From the frenetic beats of “Distant Sun” to the funked up jazz vox on “By the scruff of the neck”, the uber-cool chill-out of “Billie”, the hypnotic clubmix “Superfly Agarric”, through to the haunting “Out of the darkness”.

Mark Graham fuses elements of dance, jazz, hip hop, post-folk, electronica, beats and scratches to create soundscapes that drip and crackle with atmosphere and energy. But more than this, by refusing to conform to preconceived ideas, he is creating his own foundry, forging and melding his own eclectic path.
